Igal (Igal)

Due to its spa and thermal baths the settlement has become well known not only in Hungary but also internationally.

The first written record of its name dates from 1193 and by 1272 it was listed as a village. In 1686 it was given the privileges of a Hajduk settlement, which it earned through its role in the liberation of the surrounding settlements from the Turkish.Igal

In the first decades of the 20th century Baumgartner House was a meeting place of famous writers and fine artists. József Rippl-Rónai, István Csók, and Vilmos Aba-Novák were among those who spent various lengths of time here.

From the 1960's the name Igal became well known for its spa and thermal baths not only throughout Hungary but also abroad. It all began in 1947 when prospecting for oil in the town's marketplace; thermal water of 81 degrees Centigrade rushed to the surface from a depth of 651 metres. The spa developed here has been frequented by those seeking a cure since 1962.

At 301 metres, Csúcsos Hill on the outskirts of town is the highest peak in the area. In clear weather the surface of Lake Balaton can be seen from its summit.
